Jewish Cemeteries in Scotland

The records of most Jewish cemeteries in Scotland are held by the
Scottish Jewish Archives Centre, 
Garnethill Synagogue, 127 Hill Street,
Glasgow,  G3 6UB, Scotland.

  Cemetery Information by City

Edinburgh

In 1795, Herman Lyon(Lion), a dentist and "corn operator" from Prussia who had settled in Edinburgh, purchased a burial plot for himself and his family north of the City Observatory on Calton Hill.  Lost for many years, the site was rediscovered in 1994.
Braid Place (now Sciennes House Place), was used 1820-1867.  The two extant lists of burials give details of approximately thirty people.
Echobank (Newington) Cemetery , off Dalkeith Road, used  c1869- c1945. Inscriptions were transcribed by Cramer in 1951, listing some 130 burials in great detail. 
The current Jewish cemetery in Edinburgh is Piershill, with more than a thousand burials. Cramer transcribed sixty of the oldest stones, c1890-1923 .  Registers are held by the Synagogue, 4 Salisbury Road, Edinburgh EH16 5AA.

Glasgow

Necropolis - by the Cathedral; 53 Jews were buried here from 1832 until 1851.
Eastern Necropolis (Janefield) in Parkhead.  Used 1856 - 1935 -  over 500 Jewish burials. 
Craigton Cemetery, Govan - 1881-1897, over 230 Jews buried at Craigton.
The Western Necropolis, Tresta Road in Maryhill;  over a thousand burials  since 1898. 
Riddrie Cemetery: 1909-1977 - over 730 burials.
Sandymount Cemetery, Hallhill Road,Barlanark. 2200 burials 1908-93.
Glenduffhill Cemetery, Hallhill Rd. Opened 1934 - over 6000 burials.
Cathcart Hebrew Cemetery, Netherlee Road, G44. In use since 1927.
Glasgow New Synagogue (Reform) has a small section in Cardonald Cemetery, 547 Mosspark Boulevard, G52.  Opened in 1952, it contains around 90 burials.

Aberdeen

Grove Cemetery (Mugiemoss Road,Persley) in Aberdeen contains 72 Jewish burials
since 1911, and the cemetery office contains the registers.

Dundee

There have been burials in the Jewish section of the Eastern Cemetery in Arbroath Road since the 1880s. Registers are available from Mr H Gillis, c/o The Synagogue, St Mary's Place,
Dundee, DD1 5RB. 

Greenock

The former Greenock Hebrew Congregation buried 16 members in the cemetery in Bow Road between 1908 and 1945. 

Inverness

The most northerly Jewish cemetery in the British Isles is located in Inverness, where the community is long defunct.  The Archives Centre has a list of twenty Jews buried in Tomnahurich
Cemetery since 1906.
