JEWISH DEATHS IN HUGHES MANSIONS
Vallance Road, Stephney, London on 27 March 1945 caused by the
last V2 Rocket attack on London
NOTES: 1. Those marked with *** are listed in M. Lazarus,
A Club Called Brady, 1996, as having died at Hughes Mansions.
2. The names have been extracted from the Commonwealth War Graves Commision’s
Register of Civilian War Dead of the Borough of Stepney, a copy of which
was provided by the Tower Hamlets Local History Library, Bancroft Road.
However, Fay Fradkin, who died at Claybury Hospital, is listed in the Ilford
Register. In addition the Local History Library provided an incomplete
list of all those killed in Hughes Mansions. Apart from those marked ***
their selection has been on the basis of name. For this reason it may not
be complete. 3. The deceased armed forces personnel are not listed in the Stepney Register
but their inclusion is based on inference, viz the date of death, and being
a member of a deceased family. In the cases of Pte Finlay and of Pilot
Officer Mantus they are included in the notices of death of their families
in the Jewish Chronicle, 6th April, 1945. Being wartime – in order not
to give information to the enemy - the death notices did not mention the
bombing of Hughes Mansions but the reference is obvious.
