Most of the files available for downloading on this website were compressed using the PC program Winzip. They are known as Winzip self-extractor files because when they have been downloaded onto a PC, it is only necessary to double click on their name to have them expanded (uncompressed or unzipped if you prefer).
If you have a Macintosh, there are some utility programs which you can use as listed below.

ZipIt
This is a shareware program for about 12 dollars. Download it
by going to: http://www.shareware.com/ then selecting Macintosh, then type in ZipIt and search.
To use ZipIt, download the file you want, choosing Word-2 format. If Netscape tells you to use a plug-in, ignore it and "Save" the file.
When it is done in your browser, "Save As" and give it a slightly different
name. Then open ZipIt, do "Open" from the file menu, select the saved file,
do "Open", double-click on the file in the box that appears, and it will expand it in Word 2 format. Then open that in Word 5.1 and it will translate (slowly) to Word 5 and you are done.
Popular browsers can be set up to invoke StuffIt Expander as a "helper application" to process archived and encoded files which are downloaded from WWW servers. After you obtain StuffIt Expander, you may want to configure your browser to use it for BinHex'ed (hqx) and StuffIt encoded (sit) files.
StuffIt Expander is itself archived and encoded. If you have a previous version of StuffIt Expander on your system, it can be used to decode and unarchive the new one. If you don't have a previous version of StuffIt Expander, you will need to locate tools to manually decode and unarchive the file. For convenience, StuffIt Expander is available either as a binhexed archive (suffix .hqx) or as an AppleSingle archive (suffix .bin). Download whichever version is more convenient for you.

Compact Pro
This is an alternative shareware program. Download
it by going to: http://www.shareware.com/ then selecting Macintosh, then type in Compact Pro and search.
