IAJGS Conference Paris 2012

Welcome to London
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain (JGSGB) is pleased to announce that we will be putting on several genealogical events following the end of the IAJGS Paris Conference for delegates coming to the UK.
We hope that many of the delegates attending the International Conference in Paris, who plan to also visit the UK, will appreciate the following offerings from JGSGB from July 19th 2012 onwards:
- The JGSGB Library at the West London Synagogue, 33 Seymour Place, London W1H 5AU will be open all day on Thursday 19th July and on the morning of Friday 20th July. JGSGB members and other expert volunteers will be on hand to help visitors;
- There will be a presentation at 33 Seymour Place on the afternoon of Thursday 19th July about how to do genealogical research in the UK; and
- Depending on demand, JGSGB will be arranging visits to cemeteries, archives and Jewish museums in London during the week commencing 23rd July.
Laurence Harris, JGSGB Member, ex-Chairman of JGSGB and Professional Genealogist will give a talk on Thursday 19th July at 2.30 p.m. on the subject of:
UK Records 1870-1930: Residents and Transmigrants
1870-1930 was a period of mass immigration to the UK by Jews fleeing the pogroms and poverty of Eastern Europe. Some stayed in the UK and established new congregations, whilst many continued their emigration on to USA, Canada, South America, South Africa and Australia. This lecture identifies the main sources of civil, religious, and Jewish community records available to trace Jewish ancestors who lived in, or journeyed via, the UK during this period (including births, marriages and deaths, Synagogue records, newspapers, charities, school records, and trade directories). The lecture will cover sources including Wills, censuses, passenger records, alien registration, Naturalization and military records
For anyone who cannot obtain accommodation in London due to the proximity of the 2012 Olympics, we will be asking JGSGB Members if they are willing to provide accommodation to visitors. Please note that no offers of accommodation are available as yet but we will update the situation as offers come in.
To help JGSGB plan the proposed events in more detail, please indicate by completing and submitting this form if you intend to come to the UK following the Paris Conference and want to take part in any specific activity.

Chairman JGSGB
