In 2013 and 2015 Jill wrote two articles for Shemot on UK naturalisation and citizenship, which engendered quite a bit of interest from members. She has now brought her articles right up to date in this new presentation which charts our ancestors’ move to naturalisation and citizenship (and their reasons) over about 100 years from 1844 to 1950, including those who did not change their status from aliens, and what they did. She finishes with a “before” and “after “– how 2025 is different to past times.
About Jill Whitehead
Jill Whitehead is on the Council of the JGSGB, and she was formerly on the board of the now defunct Suwalki Lomza Interest Group for 10 years. All her ancestors came from the Suwalki Lomza gubernias to Northern England or Scotland between 1865 and 1875. She has written many articles for Shemot over the years and in 2002 received the Ronnie Brickman award - she is now writing about two Cantonist ancestors in the summer 2025 edition of Shemot. Jill is a retired Social Research manager and most recently has written a local history book about the growth of suburbia in south London.
After the talk, there will be an opportunity for Q&A on the talk. We will then take a 15 minute tea break, followed by an Anglo-Jewish workshop where you may share your successes and brick walls and ask any questions you might have.
