A specialist talk from the Chilterns Regional Group by Zoom on a Sheffield theme.
Following a generous funding grant from the Jane Goodman Charitable Trust, the Papers of the United Synagogue, Sheffield - “Sheffield Jewish Archives”, have been catalogued. Now deposited at Sheffield City Archives, the collection – spanning over eighty archive boxes – will shortly be made available for research.
The collection provides a significant resource for the research of British provincial communal life in the 19th and 20th century. Records span from the establishment of the first congregation in Sheffield, in the late 1830s up to present day and include three strands of collected material: synagogue records; Jewish organisations’ records; and personal papers of individuals and families.
This talk by the Project Archivist, Frankie Drummond Charig, provides an overview of how the collection came to exist, its initial care, the process of cataloguing it, and how the catalogue can be used for your own research. She’ll share images of some of the material that has been digitised and mention a few of her favourite archive finds along the way.
About Frankie Drummond Charig
Frankie is a qualified archivist. Prior to joining the Sheffield City Archives to catalogue the “Sheffield Jewish Archives” she worked as Project Archivist on two other grant-funded projects: the Leeds Animation Workshop Archive at the Special Collections Leeds University Library; and “Unlocking the Cavendish Family Papers” Cataloguing Project at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire.
Other archive repositories she has worked in include Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, Elstree; The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, London; and the National Railway Museum, York. She has a postgraduate qualification in Archive & Records Management and an MA and BA Hons in History of Art from the University of York.
