Join us for a lively and engaging conversation as Doreen Berger leads our discussion on the protection of young lone Jewish women and girls arriving in England from Eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This is a little-talked-about part of Anglo-Jewish history.

Many were saved from exploitation by the work done by the cousinhood families, which, is our speaker's speciality subject.

About Doreen Berger

Doreen Berger is a past Chairman and past Vice-President of The Society.  She is a specialist in Anglo-Jewry and founded and was Chair of the Anglo-Jewish Special Interest Group for many years.

Her two reference books: THE JEWISH VICTORIAN: Genealogical Information from the Jewish Newspapers cover the 1870s and 1860s in Victorian England and can be found in many international libraries, including the New York Public Library and the Hebrew University.  They are on the open shelves of the Newspaper Section of the British Library.

She writes many genealogical articles, including as an occasional contributor to The Jewish Chronicle and the Jewish News. She is a contributor to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.  She was instrumental in showing that both Ken Livingston and Jeremy Corbyn have no Jewish ancestry, contrary to their own statements.

She wrote the Historic Report on the Balls Pond Road Cemetery of the West London Synagogue and, together with the late Janet Girsman, obtained listed status for this important site, saving it from re-development.
