This will cover one name studies and how these could be useful for those of us researching our Jewish ancestors.
In this presentation we explore what a One-Name or surname Study is and why we may focus on a surname in our genealogical pursuits. We explore types of surnames and how surnames evolved in a variety of Countries.
We look at the impact of languages and dialects on surnames, the development of variants and deviants of those surnames; and explore the impact of migration on surnames.
About Julie Goucher
Julie Goucher BA (Hons) History trained in pharmacy and eventually went into pharmacy management. A relocation from Surrey to the south west of England provided a possibility to return to the University and read history. Having completed a history degree Julie returned to pharmacy moving into pharmacy training and professional development and in 2011 began doing less of pharmacy based, work and transitioned into genealogical research and writing.
Julie has been actively researching her own ancestry since the late 1980s and that of her husband since 1993; inspired by visits to and information from her Great Aunts and Uncles. Her own maternal ancestry is very much focused on the UK Counties of Surrey, Sussex, and Hampshire with a degree of migration and links to India, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
Her paternal ancestry is from Sicily and it was researching the Italian surname of Orlando that was Julie's first step into the concept of one-name studies, when Julie began noting all the Orlandos as she researched. By 2002, when the Orlando surname was registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies the amount of research she had undertaken was significant, although it was the internet age that really enabled the study to become more global and a study on migration from Italy & Sicily to England, United States and beyond. Julie has been the project administrator for the Orlando DNA Project hosted at Family Tree DNA since 2007.
Julie now spends her time writing for a variety of genealogical magazines and books both relevant to genealogy, pharmacy, or education & learning. Julie has also presented & lectured at Who Do You Think You Are? Live, the Society of Genealogists and globally either in person or electronically. In 2019 Julie was awarded from the Guild of One-Name Studies the Master Craftsman Award in recognition of her significant contribution to the running of the Guild or an excellence in One-Name Studies. In 2019 Julie was awarded, from the Society of Genealogists, the Certificate of Recognition for exceptional services to genealogy and one-name studies, promoting methodology, aims, processes and strategies. Julie remains a Trustee for the Guild of One-Name Studies.
