• Title: Illegitimacy in the Jewish Communities of Galicia
• Speaker: Janette Silverman
• Description: Many birth, marriage and death records in the Jewish community use terms like “illegitimate” and “ritual marriage”. This session will discuss those records and the insight we can gain from them about the lives of our ancestors. The many punitive and restrictive laws in the Austrian Empire resulted in choices made by the Jewish community to circumvent these. Originally instituted to curtail the size of the Jewish community and create boundaries, the communities themselves changed and found ways to work around the laws.
About Dr. Janette Silverman
Janette Silverman is a professional genealogist, working for AncestryProGenealogists, the division of Ancestry.com that does private client research. She heads up a team of 9 genealogists specializing in Eastern European and Jewish research.

Janette began her genealogical journey more than 35 years ago as a hobby with her father. What started as a hobby quickly became more as she immersed herself in Jewish history, both as a student and a teacher. Janette served as a Board member of the IAJGS was president of a Jewish Genealogy Society; lead co-chair of the 2016 IAJGS conference and for over 6 years was the Coordinator of the JewishGen Ukraine SIG. She has worked with private clients since 2004.

Janette holds master's and doctorate degrees in Jewish studies from Spertus Institute in Chicago. Her doctoral dissertation, “In Living Memory,” explored the experiences of four Jewish families in Europe and the United States, contextualizing the micro-history of those families within the more global historical world. Her areas of research expertise include Eastern European Jews, the Holocaust, the United States and immigration. She has traveled widely in Eastern Europe doing onsite archival research and accompanying clients on ancestral home visits. Janette’s new book” Stories They Never Told Us” was published in August 2024 and is available at your favourite on-line book distributors.
