• Speaker: Harvey Kaplan of the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre

• Description: The Scottish Jewish Archives Centre (SJAC) opened in 1987 as a national heritage, information and research centre, dedicated to preserving historic material relating to the experience of Jewish people in Scotland over the past 200 years.

SJAC is documenting the experiences of those who came to Scotland in the 1930s and 1940s, including Kindertransport refugees, refugee doctors, domestic service visa holders, political refugees, Polish soldiers, businessmen, artists, rabbis, cantors, and concentration camp survivors. The collections include a wide range of documents such as birth, marriage, and death certificates, identity documents, military records, and personal testimonies.

Harvey Kaplan graduated MA in History at the University of Glasgow. A retired civil servant, he is Director and co-founder (1987) of the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre. He has contributed numerous articles on Scottish Jewish history and family history to books, journals such as Shemot and magazines. He has lectured locally, nationally and at 8 IAJGS conferences. A member of JGSGB almost since its inception, Harvey was added to the Roll of Honour in 2012. His booklet The Jews of the Gorbals in 1901 was published in 2006 and he was one of the 3-man team who produced Jewish Glasgow-An Illustrated History in 2013. In 2018, he contributed a survey of sources and resources for Jewish history in Scotland to 200 Years of Scottish Jewry by Kenneth Collins, Aubrey Newman and Bernard Wasserstein. He has also written about Scottish Jews in the First World War. Harvey has spent many years researching his own family history back to 18^th century Lithuania, Poland, Galicia and Ukraine.
